Ep 340 Fear as a Compass for Growth with Joze Piranian, International Keynote Speaker, Author, and Stand-up Comedian; Toronto, ON, Canada

Fear isn’t something to eliminate, it’s a compass pointing to the next chapter of growth.

In this episode, I spoke with Joze Piranian about his remarkable journey from living with a severe stutter to becoming a keynote speaker, comedian, and author. We explored his book Stop Holding Back: An Honest Guide to Turning Fear into Action, including the concept of the “inner stutter,” micro moments of bravery, and strategies for reframing fear in both personal and professional settings. Joze shared how repeatedly exposing himself to fear through speaking exercises, stand-up comedy, and even musical performance, and how it helped him build confidence, embrace vulnerability, and connect authentically with audiences.

We also discussed actionable leadership lessons for navigating fear, practicing accountability, and fostering courage in teams, as well as how humor and performance can be powerful tools for personal growth. This conversation is packed with insights for anyone looking to move past self-doubt and take decisive action in life and business.

Here are the highlights:

● Overcoming the inner stutter. Inaction in the face of fear can be identified and addressed by recognizing self-limiting beliefs and creating repeated opportunities to confront discomfort.

● Micro moments of bravery. Small, deliberate actions—like speaking up in social situations or taking on challenging tasks—build confidence incrementally and reshape one’s relationship with fear.

● Fear and action can coexist. Action does not require the absence of fear; performing while afraid strengthens resilience, decision-making, and personal growth.

● Using humor and performance to grow. Incorporating elements like comedy, speaking exercises, or musical performance can help individuals embrace vulnerability, build confidence, and connect authentically with others.

● Leadership lessons for navigating fear. Leaders can model courage, practice accountability, and foster a culture where confronting fear and taking action is normalized and encouraged.
